    Description

Join us for a beautiful two-day workshop led by Lottie Cole of Minerva Workshop and learn how to create your very own gathered lampshade from start to finish. Whether you're crafting one for your home or dreaming of making more in future, this workshop will give you the professional techniques and confidence to continue making beyond the class.

Over the course of the two days, you’ll explore both machine and hand techniques to achieve a high-quality, fully lined gathered lampshade complete with handmade bias binding.

The empire lampshade frame will have a base diameter measurement of 25cm/10” and is available to purchase on the day.

    What you'll learn:

    Day One:

    • How to bind your lampshade frame
    • How to gather your outer fabric by hand and machine
    • How to hand sew the outer using the traditional streetly (lampshade) stitch

    Day Two:

    • How to create a gathered lining (fabric supplied, or bring your own)
    • How to make and attach handmade bias binding to finish your shade

We’ll also cover tips on choosing frames, fittings and trims so you can continue your lampshade making journey at home, either for pleasure or professionally.

Skills: Suitable for beginners, though a love of hand sewing is essential – there’s lots of it!

    Choosing your material:

You’ll need a fine, lightweight fabric such as Liberty Tana Lawn, Indian block print or quilting cotton (80–150gsm is ideal). Please avoid heavy or stretchy fabrics such as velvet or jersey.

    • Outer fabric: 1m (or 1.5m if you'd like to make a second matching shade at home)
    • Lining fabric: 0.5m

You're welcome to bring your own fabrics or purchase them on the day from Clothkits with a 10% discount. Please allow time before the class to choose from our fabulous range of fabrics!

Additional cost: A materials pack including the frame, tape and lining is available for £12, payable directly to the tutor on the day (cash or card).

About your Teacher: Lottie Cole runs Minerva Workshop and has been teaching lampshade making for over five years. Originally in a studio in London she's now based in East Sussex.

Class Size: Maximum class size of 6.

Venue: Join us in our bright, welcoming studio space above the Clothkits shop in the heart of Chichester. Just a 10-minute stroll from the train and bus stations, we're easy to reach whether you're arriving by rail, road or foot. The nearest car park is The Cattle Market, just around the corner. A creative haven in the centre of town, perfect for a day of making.
